Boast of our affliction. What a funny thing to say. When we are afflicted, with suffering, death, disorders, loss of relationship, mental illness, physical illness, the last thing we want to do is go out and boast about it. Why does God let bad things happen to His people? One of the great questions of faith, and one that I’ve asked many times in my life. There’s no real easy answer, but there is hope found in this passage and many others. You see, the afflictions in life lead us to endurance. Endurance leads to character. Finally it’s in this character, these traits that we as a people find hope, and hope is the best of things. The people in my life who have affected my faith most profoundly, are the people who have endured through suffering and affliction, and have developed character because of it. It’s those people who have boasted of there affliction, because through their boasting they’ve led me closer to God. So, Lord, help me today, to not dwell in my affliction but to boast of it, because I know that through my affliction I will be brought closer to you, and provide hope to others.

I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.” I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

We were chatting yesterday about how some people get so consumed and caught up in relationships, that they lose themselves. After which, she posted this quote to FB. Not sure where she got it from, but I love it, so I thought I would post it here.

God knows my name

I received a small reward at work the other day, not much, simply some recognition for a job well done. The reward was a certificate of achievement kind of thing, and the certificate had my name on it. Also, my name was spoken and some of the senior management heard it. I consider myself to be a pretty humble man, so I tend to get uncomfortable with these things, but it also makes me feel good that my name was recognized. It got me thinking about how God knows my name.

What a thought! My name on God’s hand. My name on God’s lips. Could it be?

I also got to thinking how many people out there may never have had their name honored, or heard it spoken with kindness. It’s probably really difficult for them to believe that God knows their name. But He does. Written on His hand. Spoken by His mouth. Whispered by His lips. Your name.

So, I was sitting on the back patio a few moments ago, enjoying the sun for a change. I was meditating, and praying, and an American Painted lady butterfly landed on my arm and spent a few minutes with me. It GMH. Thank you God, for your amazing creations.
